Spelling Chart
This is something that I used while on the vent to communicate with others. I was able to nod my head to indicate the row then the column of the letter in the word I was trying to communicate. Have a piece of paper and a pen handy so you can keep notes and not forget what was being said.
If you don't want to use a chart you can do the same thing by just saying the alphabet. We split it up in A-M and N-Z with me nodding my head to the side to indicate N-Z and a circular head pattern for a vowel. To indicate I wanted a vowel I rolled my head in a circle. This is a slow process, but it beats the alternative. Be patient. Tell the GBS patient what you want to do and work out some form of communication. Being at the mercy of a nursing staff and unable to communicate is a horrible experience, work out a way of communicating and they will thank you later.
Just copy the chart into a blank document in your word processor and print. If you prefer e-mail me your request and I will e-mail one to you. Download it as a PDF or as a DOC!!
